Climate Justice has become a rallying call since the climate summit in Copenhagen, and a new resolution adopted by the EU Parliament shows that some politicians are starting to listen.  Members of the European Parliament (MEP) say the EU and Member States should enforce the principle of ‘climate justice’ in future international climate negotiations in a resolution adopted on 10 February 2010.

MEPs also urged the EU not to falter in its commitment to combating climate change and to set an ambitious target for CO2 reduction greater than 20% for 2020. The resolution emphasized that the delay in reaching an international agreement in Copenhagen should not be an excuse to postpone further EU policies to achieve legally binding reduction commitments that already exist.

The movement for Climate Justice continues to put pressure on political leaders around the world to reach a fair, ambitious and binding climate agreement. There is increasing awareness of detrimental effects of climate change on individuals and communities around the world.  A new study by Oxfam showed that Tajikistan will experience greater water shortages and increases in extreme weather as a result of climate change.

At the opening ceremony of the inaugural ‘One Young World’ summit on Monday, February 8 in London, Climate Allies Desmond Tutu and Bob Geldof addressed delegates and guests and encouraged them to continue the fight for Climate Justice.

‘One Young World’ brought together more than 500 young people age 25 and under from over 100 countries with the aim of combining the social power of the internet with the energy and ideas of global youth to address the most challenging issues of today, including climate change.

Desmond Tutu praised the efforts of young people in the fight for Climate Justice so far:

“It was young people who were out on the streets in Copenhagen, saying: “Hey, you oldies, why don’t you care about carbon emissions? The sea level is rising. Islands are at risk of being submerged. It is happening!”

Bob Geldof spoke about the urgent need for action:

“There is work to be done. As Mahatma Gandhi said: ‘First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you, then you win.

“COP15 in Denmark was a disgrace. This can only be resolved with cooperation, consultation and compromise.”
