The ‘tck tck tck – Time for Climate Justice’ campaign has united Climate Allies worldwide in the call for a fair, ambitious and binding agreement at the UN climate talks in Copenhagen. Climate Allies include people just like you and over 80 high profile individuals from all walks of life. Some of them are on the ground in Copenhagen, amplifying our collective voices in the call for Climate Justice at COP-15.
Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu joined 100,000 people who took part in the candlelight vigil in Copenhagen on Saturday 12th December. On Sunday, at the City Square, Tutu said: “We need a legally binding agreement”, before dancing with the crowd to the song ‘People’ by Danish band Outlandish. Tutu also called for a 40 percent reduction in the greenhouse gas emissions of developed countries by 2050.
Minutes later, Yvo de Boer greeted Desmond Tutu on stage and announced to a cheering crowd that he thought this too modest and called for an even higher 80 percent cut. UN climate chief de Boer is working around the clock to ensure that progress is made in the negotiations.
350.org founder Bill McKibben, who spoke with delegates inside the Bella Center, declared: “The fight for Climate Justice continues!”
2004 Nobel Peace Prize laureate Wangari Maathai has just been designated as a UN Messenger of Peace moon with a special focus on the environment and climate change. She was inducted into the role by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Tuesday 15 December in Copenhagen.
Mary Robinson, a member of The Elders, was present at the vigil on Saturday and spoke about the need for Climate Justice: “If there is greater water stress, if there are more floods, if desertification is pushing millions of people to become environmental refugees… yes, it's more likely that we will face conflicts. This is urgent, it is extremely serious. This conference is make or break for the world. Otherwise, neither rich nor poor countries will survive in this world beyond 2050. It's 'we' now, not 'them and us'. We should stop looking at the small print and start being political together.”
